Observation Narrative
This stand is on a high, well-drained alluvial flat adjacent to the Nottoway River main channel. A shallow depression that may be flooded during the winter and spring is located at the back edge of the plot. The forest contains several large trees and an 800 square meter plot was sampled to document the representative tree diversity. A Quercus michauxii 146 cm DBH and a Q. pagoda 115 cm DBH dominate the overstory, along with smaller individuals of Liquidambar styraciflua, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Nyssa sylvatica. Ilex opaca and Carpinus caroliniana co-dominate the understory, while various sedges and grasses contribute most of the herb cover. According to stand age data developed by the former owner, International Paper, this stand was last logged around 1890.
